PM Surya Ghar subsidy calculator 2026 | MNRE solar rooftop subsidy | Central + state subsidy | Payback period & lifetime savings

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by the Government of India in February 2024, is one of the largest rooftop solar schemes in the world. The mission aims to provide rooftop solar panels to 1 crore (10 million) Indian households by 2026-27, with a massive central government subsidy to reduce the financial burden on homeowners. Our free PM Surya Ghar Subsidy Calculator helps you estimate exactly how much government subsidy you will receive, how much you need to pay, and how quickly you will recover your investment through electricity savings.

Whether you are considering a 1 KW, 2 KW, 3 KW, or larger solar system, this calculator shows you the complete financial picture: central subsidy from MNRE, state-level additional subsidies, net installation cost, monthly electricity savings, annual savings, payback period, and total lifetime savings over 25 years — all in one place, without any registration or sign-up.

How to Use the PM Surya Ghar Subsidy Calculator

  1. Select Your State — Choose your state or UT. States like Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and J&K offer additional state subsidies on top of central subsidy.
  2. Enter Monthly Bill & Units — Enter your average monthly electricity bill (₹) and/or monthly consumption in units (kWh). The calculator uses this to recommend the right solar system size.
  3. Select Residential Category — Choose General/Urban, BPL (Below Poverty Line), or Rural. BPL and rural households may be eligible for additional benefits under state schemes.
  4. Choose Solar System Size — The calculator recommends the best system size based on your usage. You can also click any system card (1KW to 10KW) to see detailed calculations.
  5. View Complete Results — Instantly see: Central subsidy, State subsidy, Total subsidy, Your final cost, Monthly savings, Annual savings, Payback period, 25-year lifetime savings, and CO₂ saved.

Frequently Asked Questions

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a flagship Government of India scheme launched on 22 February 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under this scheme, 1 crore households will get rooftop solar installations with central government subsidy. Eligible families get up to 300 units of free electricity per month. The scheme is implemented by MNRE (Ministry of New & Renewable Energy) through DISCOM (electricity distribution companies).

The MNRE central subsidy rates for 2026-27 are: ₹30,000 per KW for the first 2 KW, and ₹18,000 for the 3rd KW. Maximum central subsidy is ₹78,000 (for 3 KW and above). This subsidy is credited directly to your bank account after DISCOM inspection and net meter installation.

Several states offer additional subsidies on top of the MNRE central subsidy: Gujarat offers up to ₹10,000/KW extra, Himachal Pradesh ₹5,000/KW extra, Delhi ₹2,000/KW, and J&K up to ₹10,000/KW. State subsidies change frequently — always check your state electricity board or DISCOM portal for the latest rates.

The maximum subsidy under PM Surya Ghar is for systems up to 3 KW capacity (₹78,000 maximum). For systems above 3 KW, the central subsidy remains capped at ₹78,000. However, you can install a larger system (4 KW, 5 KW, 10 KW) at your own cost for maximum savings — the subsidy just won't increase beyond ₹78,000.

With PM Surya Ghar subsidy, the payback period for a 3 KW system is typically 4 to 7 years for most Indian states. Without subsidy it would be 7 to 10 years. After payback, all electricity generation is essentially free profit for the remaining 15–18 years of panel life (25-year lifespan).

In India, 1 KW of solar panels generates approximately 100 to 140 units (kWh) per month, depending on location, roof angle, shading, and seasonal variation. At an average of 5.5 peak sun hours/day with 80% system efficiency, 1 KW generates ≈ 132 kWh per month.

All Indian residential households owning a property with a valid electricity consumer number are eligible. The property must have adequate roof area (1 KW needs approx 10 sq meters of shadow-free roof space). The applicant must have a valid Aadhaar card and bank account linked to it.

Step 1: Visit the official portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Step 2: Register using your electricity consumer number and Aadhaar. Step 3: Apply for rooftop solar from the portal. Step 4: After DISCOM approval, get the system installed by an empanelled vendor. Step 5: DISCOM installs net meter. Step 6: Subsidy is credited directly to your bank account (DBT) within 30 days.

Standard grid-tied solar systems (the type subsidized under PM Surya Ghar) do NOT work during power cuts — they automatically shut off as a safety feature when the grid goes down. If you want power backup during outages, you need an additional battery storage system (not covered under PM Surya Ghar subsidy).

Net metering is a billing system where your electricity meter runs backwards when your solar panels generate more power than you consume. The excess electricity is exported to the grid, and you get credit on your electricity bill. This means on sunny days you earn credits which offset your nighttime or cloudy-day consumption — effectively using the grid as a free battery.

Yes. Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana, collateral-free loans are available through nationalized banks at concessional rates for the amount above the subsidy. The government has also tied up with banks like SBI, Bank of Baroda, and Canara Bank for easy solar loans. Many banks offer EMI starting from as low as ₹800–₹1,200 per month for a 3 KW system after subsidy.
