Frequently Asked Questions

An electricity bill in India = Energy Charges + Fixed Charges + Electricity Duty + Fuel Adjustment Charge + Other Surcharges. Energy Charges = Monthly Units x Per Unit Rate. Fixed charges are levied monthly regardless of consumption. Electricity duty is a state tax (5% to 20%) applied on the subtotal.

1 unit = 1 kWh (kilowatt-hour) = 1000 watts used for 1 hour. To read your consumption, subtract previous month reading from current reading on your electricity meter. This gives you units consumed. For example: Current reading 1450, Previous 1150 = 300 units consumed.

Electricity duty is a state-level tax charged on electricity consumption. It ranges from 0% (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu) to 20% (Gujarat) to 16% (Maharashtra). This duty goes to the state government and is separate from the energy charges paid to DISCOM.

Fuel Adjustment Charge (FAC) is a per-unit charge that varies monthly based on fuel costs (coal, gas) used by power plants. It can be positive or negative. When fuel costs rise, FAC increases your bill. It is regulated by the state electricity regulatory commission (SERC).

Commercial/industrial consumers pay higher rates because they have better ability to pay, and these revenues are used to cross-subsidize domestic and agricultural consumers who pay lower rates. This is called cross-subsidy, mandated by the Electricity Act 2003.

Key tips: (1) Use 5-star BEE rated appliances. (2) Set AC at 24-26°C. (3) Replace incandescent bulbs with LED. (4) Use ceiling fans with AC. (5) Unplug devices on standby. (6) Install rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar scheme. (7) Wash clothes in cold water. (8) Use natural light during daytime.

Many states use a slab system where different rates apply to different consumption levels. For example: First 100 units at ₹3/unit, 101-300 units at ₹5/unit, above 300 units at ₹7/unit. Higher consumption attracts higher rates per unit. Our calculator uses an average rate for simplicity — check your bill for exact slab rates.

No, electricity bills vary monthly based on consumption. Bills are typically higher in summer (April-June) due to AC usage, and lower in winter and monsoon. The per-unit rate may also change if you cross into a higher consumption slab.

Sanctioned load (connected load) is the maximum power capacity (in kW or kVA) approved for your connection. Fixed charges are based on this sanctioned load. Actual consumption (in kWh) is what you actually used. Energy charges are based on actual consumption.

This calculator gives a close estimate based on the rates you enter. Actual bills may vary due to slab-based tariffs, state-specific surcharges, time-of-day tariffs, or arrears/adjustments. Use your actual per-unit rate from your electricity bill for the most accurate results.

Yes. Select "Commercial" as consumer type. The calculator automatically adjusts rates to approximately 25% higher than domestic rates (as is typical in most states). For exact commercial rates, enter your actual per-unit rate from your commercial electricity bill.
